When my husband got the call that we were moving to Texas, I was full of mixed emotions. On one hand I loved living in San Diego, but, on the other hand, I desperately missed being close to my family and living in a much cheaper place. I loved the idea of living in Texas and was super excited to start house shopping in such a neat place. Once I realized that we would be able to purchase our own little farm, I was beyond excited to start house shopping! We finished up the house projects on our San Diego house, listed our home, and then started the house hunting process.
If you have never house hunted, remotely, in a new city be thankful. No matter how much research you do, places always seem different in person and once you have lived there for a little while. When we purchased in San Diego, we got really lucky with the area we picked. I was hoping to get that lucky in Texas too. After several months of house hunting, we knew the general areas we wanted to be in based off of commuting distance to Kyle’s work (little did we know about Covid-19 haha). We just didn’t have any luck finding what we were looking for. We decided that we were not going to settle for something that we weren’t 100% in love with. That is when we opted to purchase and live in an RV until we found our perfect house.
We purchased our RV, moved in, and two weeks later headed to Houston, TX. We were loaded down with our three dogs and three cats in the RV and two horses and the donkey in the truck and trailer. We took several days and traveled across the country to Texas. If you have ever driven across the state of Texas then you know that it is VERY big. That whole trip could be a series of posts in itself. We settled into a very nice RV park and moved the horses and the donkey into a boarding facility. We continued to house hunt.
After about a month of RV life and continued house hunting, we were still not having any luck. My husband and I decided to change up our search parameters just a little bit. We increased the commute time by about 15 minutes. There it was! Awful pictures and everything. I don’t know about you, but I get these gut feelings when something is right or wrong. I had one of those “right” feelings. Kyle and I immediately drove out to the property to see exactly how far away it was. It wasn’t a bad drive at all! The next day we drove out during the day time. All it took was pulling into the driveway. I would have bought the house and never even set foot inside. The property was stunning! Oaks trees scattered about the property, a big red horse barn, wood fencing throughout the property, and this cute house. We called the realtor and set up a showing. And the rest is pretty much history after that! Now I am sitting at my kitchen table, knee deep in renovations that should have been completed two months ago, writing this blog post. This home is our own little slice of heaven, especially in the chaotic world we live in right now. Our little ranch, Summer Oaks Ranch, as we are calling it.
If you have ever purchased a home with “good bones” and “potential” then you’ll understand the feelings of excitement and hope that I am writing about. Kyle and I immediately started creating the picture of the home that we wanted to create for ourselves. It is easy to get brought down by the exhaustion of the projects. You just have to keep reminding yourself about those feelings and remind yourself that the end result that is just right around the corner. I am so excited to document this journey and share it with you, the reader! I have a certain passion for bringing blah things or old things and giving them new life and purpose. I hope that you too will enjoy this process with us. Plus, I will share a lot of other things that I have a passion for as well!
Happy house projecting!
